Boom 2

For most users looking for a mid-priced wireless speaker, the Boom 3 is the one to get. It offers all that you need to listen to your favorite music over a long period of time between charges, even when swimming.

Pros

  • Why is Ultimate Ears Boom 2 better than Ultimate Ears Megaboom? 48.1% less body volume 808.02cm³ vs 1556.914cm³; Has a socket for a 3.5 mm audio jack?
  • No one tests wireless & bluetooth speakers like we do. Get ratings, pricing, and performance on the Ultimate Ears Boom 2 wireless & bluetooth speaker based on the features you care about.
  • Boom Supersonic is building a faster future. Our Mach-2.2 airliner will make the world dramatically more accessible—-at today's business-class fares.
  • Super sound
  • 15 hours between charges
  • IP67 water and dustproof rating
  • 45m wireless range
  • Customizable EQ

The Boom 2 is still a very good speaker. In fact, there's no difference with the sound between the two models. Where it lacks is on durability and range.

Pros

Wonderboom
  • Available in various color choices (including special editions)
  • Also offers 15 hours of music between charges

Page 1 Tap Controls let you control the music directly from your UE BOOM 2. To do a tap first pick up the UE BOOM 2 and hold it upright. Tap the top of the speaker one time to play music from your mobile device. Tap the top of the speaker again to pause the music. Enjoy clear and powerful music wherever you go with the Ultimate Ears UE BOOM 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker. It has a 360-degree range to spread audio throughout the room or outdoor spaces.

Cons

  • Less range (33m)
  • A little bit less durable than its successor
Boom

No matter if you get the Boom 2 or the Boom 3, you're going to get a solid speaker. You just have to figure out if buying the newest model is the right choice for you. Normally, the only advantage you get with an older model is a drop in price, but the price difference between these two speakers is small enough that you should still go with the Boom 3.

Breaking it down

When you compare these Ultimate Ear speakers, you're not going to find that many differences between the two. Despite this, there are key reasons to choose the new one over the old.

For more money, you get a newer device that has more Bluetooth range, can charge with Ultimate Ears' Power Up device and has better water resistance. Despite this, the newer device hasn't made any advances when it comes to sound and hours of enjoyment between charges. Both the Boom 3 and Boom 2 offer 15 hours of service between charges and both also have the same frequency range.

There's no doubt about it, the Boom 3 is newer than the Boom 2. As such, it offers a few new features over its predecessor. With that being said, this is an incremental update at best, which is something to consider when the price is the most important factor. If you want to spend a little less on your Bluetooth speaker and don't care about the range or other small features, it might be worth it to get the Boom 2. You'll be getting similar sound either way.

Another small factor that might influence your purchase: Do you like out-of-the-ordinary colors or styles? Ultimate Ears often reveals special editions for all of its speaker lineups, so a specific one might catch your eye. If you're eying the Boom 3 but don't like the choices, sit tight. More colors are probably coming soon.

Our pick

It's the best Boom to date

The evolution continues. After making broad changes between the Boom and Boom 2, Ultimate Ears slowed down making advances when it designed the Boom 3. It's still the best Boom to date, however, and one of our favorites.

UE BOOM 2 is a compact, durable wireless Bluetooth speaker manufactured by Ultimate Ears, a subsidiary of Logitech, that offers 360-degree soundstage effect. It plays louder than the original Boom, sounds better and offers tap control. The speaker is stain-resistant, shock-resistant and fully waterproof. UE Boom 2 won GOOD DESIGN award for 2015-2016.[1][2][3]

Differences between Boom 2 and the original Boom[edit]

The drivers in the UE Boom 2 were completely redesigned and provide 25% increase in loudness at maximum volume. The bass response and overall sound quality were improved. It got larger 1.75 inch active drivers and 3 inch passive radiators while the original Boom got 1.5 inch active drivers and 2 inch passive radiators.[2][4]UE Boom 2 has extended the Bluetooth range to 100 feet (30 meters).[2] While the original Boom was water resistant, Boom 2 is fully waterproof IPX7 (immersion up to 1m for 30 minutes). In addition, Boom 2 won't be affected by water even if the USB charging port or audio inputs are exposed.[2]

UE Boom 2 offers functionality that allows to pause music with one tap on the top of the speaker and skip tracks by tapping twice. The feature is facilitated by an included accelerometer.[5] UE Boom 2 has a tighter weave on the fabric cover, making it more durable.[2]

The update process has been redesigned and UE Boom 2 can be updated via the app, while UE Boom had to be connected to a computer.[2] The second version of the speaker offers Block Party feature that allows up to three people to connect to it via Bluetooth and send music to shared playlist. The owner of the UE Boom 2 can then decide which music to accept for playback.[6]
